General EPAF Imaging Questions

Can other people view imaged documents?

  • Standard WSU HR data access & security protocols & controls apply to imaged documents. This will restrict viewing to only those properly authorized to do so.

Will there be training for people doing the scanning & indexing (organizing) of files?

  • Yes - while it will not be possible to be very specific on how to setup your scanner (way too many different ones out there), there will be training that emphasizes indexing, or associating images with a particular employee and document types.
  • NOTE: This training will be highly recommended for everyone utilizing any aspect of the Imaging / Document Management system.
  • Be sure to check the EPAF training schedule from your Pipeline, Employee tab, by clicking the Training/Seminars/Workshops link at the right of the screen.

Hardware & Software Questions

What are the software requirements to use EPAF Imaging?

  • EPAF Imaging requires Windows XP with Internet Explorer 6 or Internet Explorer 7. EPAF Imaging uses WebXtender, which requires some ActiveX Controls to be installed on your PC. The process is similar to the J-Initiator software required for Banner, in that you will be prompted to install the ActiveX Controls during your initial use of EPAF Imaging. The software installation is a one-time only process. You need to logon to your Windows PC with administrator rights in order to install the WebXtender software. Contact your local technical support staff if you do not have administrator rights to your PC.

What are the steps to install the WebXtender software?

  1. Log on to the computer with administrator privileges.
  2. Start Internet Explorer (IE) version 6 or version 7.
  3. If you are using IE's Pop-up Blocker, or the pop-up blocker in either the Google or Yahoo toolbars, make sure to allow pop–up windows for *.wayne.edu.
  4. Go to http://banner.wayne.edu, and log on to Banner with an AccessID that has been granted WebXtender access.
  5. From the main menu in Banner, click the XtenderSolutions icon in the toolbar along the top of the window.
  6. Go to SOAPCOL and launch BXS (Banner XtenderSolutions). The following onetime message displays: password has been synchronized
  7. Select Help—> Check installed components and click the "current installed status" box. A onetime setup initiates to install componentcheck.cab.
  8. For those components that are not installed, double–click each and install them, possibly up to three executable files.
  9. From the query results list, check off two documents, and then select print. A onetime setup initiates to install queryresultset.cab.
  10. From query results, open any document. A onetime setup initiates to install ircviewer.cab.
  11. While viewing the document, select Page—> Enable Scanning. A onetime setup initiates to install wxscan.cab.
  12. If there is a scanner attached to the computer, select scanner with TWAIN (not WIA) driver.
  13. All seven WebXtender components have now been added to the computer.

What are the hardware requirements to use EPAF Imaging?

  • EPAF Imaging poses no additional hardware requirements over and above the Administrative Desktop Computing Specifications.
  • If you are a high-volume EPAF Scanner, Indexer, or Approver, then you may desire the convenience of an extra monitor, however dual-monitors are NOT a requirement to use EPAF.
  • If your EPAF role is a scanner, then you'll need a scanner or access to one.

Does WSU C&IT have scanner guidelines & information?

I already have a fancy copier/fax/scanner or stand-alone scanner, can we use that?

  • So far, the answer is a qualified yes. A number of tests have been conducted on those types of machines, and so far they have all been able to provide the files needed for imaging. C&IT is in touch with your local tech support people with more information on the Imaging project. Stay tuned for more details.

What should we be looking for in a scanner when purchasing one?

  • A number of factors should be considered in this purchasing decision:
  • Projected peak volume of documents to be scanned in support of your HR processes
  • Does your unit have other current, or future Imaging projects
  • Scanner features -
  • Scanner speed
  • Document feeder - tip: look for 2 take-up wheels on the feeder mechanism
  • Single side versus duplexing capability - (do you do a lot of double-side documents?)
